An Abrams tank speeds by, smoking like a cuban cigar, and you ponder what could scare such a formidable mass of steel. You hear a dull thudding as a Hind Attack Helicopter sinisterly over the mountains from whence the Abrams Came.

The weapons are very well balanced. The assault rifles are the staple weapons they should be, most widely used. The heavy machine guns are handled very well, the bullets spreading unless you fire in short bursts, making them very useful for laying down covering fire, but not overpowered as they are in some games. The anti-tank weapons work much better than they did in the original battlefield, and the stinger missiles are a nice change for ground troops from trying to hit planes with anti-tank weapons. The mortars, as well, are a very nice addition, letting you soften up an enemy base before you move in, or take out tanks from behind cover.
The vehicles of Desert Combat are very impressive, well handling modern battle platforms. From the M1A1 Abrams to the A10 anti tank plane, there is a wide variety of real life vehicles. They balance out very well, too. While the tanks are much faster and more powerful than those of the original Battlefield, they are balanced out by helicopters, mortars, and anti-tank weapons which are much more accurate. As well, the A10 anti-tank plane can wreak a swathe of death through these superiour tanks. The planes, as well, are much faster and higher powered, but this is balanced out by the new hand held anti-air weapons, the stationary SAM stations, and the higher quality (and often mobile) AA guns.
The maps of Desert combat are very impressive. Some, such as DC Oil Fields, are simply works of art, with whole large oil fields firing off the occasional gout of flame from pipes. There is a wide array of high quality maps, in addition to the original Battlefield maps.

Gameplay:
All of your old Battlefield game types are here - Conquest, CTF, etc. As well, there are some custom game modes, such as one in which the flags are numbered (1,2,3) and each team has to capture them in a different order to win.
(essentials)(teamplay, etc, main ideas of gameplay)
The game PLAYS extraordinarily well, besides the occasional excessive lag from the highly active maps such as Oil Field. Desert Combat, in fact, puts even the original to shame. The faster tanks just feel right, as does driving along in the mobile aa shooting down planes, and for the less skillful pilot, the A-10 is a blessing, laying down strips of death upon unsuspecting tanks without all that complicated 'aiming.' The helicopters handle very well, and while the fast planes feel a little odd, they still work pretty well. This game gets a well deserved nine out of ten, and if not for the slightly odd feel of the planes and the occasional lag problems on some of the map would have easily earned a ten.

Sound:
Desert Combat has excellent sound. It does not have the problem other mods seem to have of recycling sounds over and over, and they have reworked almost all of the sounds from the original Battlefield. The music is even remixed slightly, earning a ten out of ten for sound.

Graphics:
The graphics of desert combat are simply the best. Of all Battlefield mod, desert combat stands out as having the most extraordinary graphics, often rivaling those of much more up to date games. The vehicles are all smooth and sleek, representing well the style of twentieth century technology, from the low fast tanks to the Iraqi trucks, they are all perfectly skinned and animated. The explosions and effects are convincing, and the light effects are impressive. Desert Combat gets a perfect ten out of ten in the graphics department.

Overall:
If you have Battlefield 1942, download Desert Combat. It is as simple as that, Desert Combat easily ranks among the top three Battlefield mods, and is quite possibly number one.
