So I love DayZ, the zombie apocalypse mod for ArmA II. It's survival at its best. But at the same time, it's human nature at its worst. You could go a full day finding everything you need to survive in a city or a small town and not see anyone, or you may help someone else out.. and on your way out of town, in the middle of nowhere, one shot from a Bandit, and you're done. All your work feels like it goes to waste. You start over, spawn in, and right there at the spawn is a Bandit looking for nothing more than cheap thrills by taking out new players with no gear at all.
It got tiring. Especially after I'd helped out several who turned on me. And let's not even get started about the hackers that can summon everyone to one spot and kill them all with just one button, or one satchel charge.
Anyway.. other than the PvP element, I loved the game. The feel of it, the survival aspect, everything about it is the perfect survival horror sandbox game. I wanted to play it, but I didn't want to have to deal with the bull of some other player hunting me down just so he could get his rocks off, and get the gear it may have taken me longer to acquire.
Some modder named Kodabar must have felt the same way I did, because he developed a mod that allows you to play DayZ as a regular, continuous ArmA II scenario. It plays just like DayZ, but minus the online portion.
DaiZy (he even thought the name sounded stupid, but made sense because it was just AI playing with you) can be played for however long you want. It's exactly the same: you spawn in, have to work your way through zombie infested towns and villages, find gear, food, drinks, vehicle parts, etc, and find yourself a place to call home. There are several different versions that play on the other maps that have been developed for DayZ, such as Fallujah, or just the stock Charnarus map.
Don't get too comfy, though. The same elements that are updated in the original mod are also brought into DaiZy. Get hit by an infected zombie, and you become infected, and unless you find your meds, you're going to die. A zombie hit you and broke a bone? Well, better crawl to the nearest hospital and hope it has morphine.
Oh, and what was that sound you just heard break through the usual moan-filled quiet of the night? A gunshot? Yep! There are AI bandits here, and if you find and kill them before they kill you, they'll be carrying average gear or even the stuff your survivalist dreams are made of, like military-grade weapons, vehicle parts, medicine, food or equipment such as tents.
Don't fear, though! You're not completely alone amongst the bandits and zeds! There are also recruitable AI survivors that you can have carry items, give different weapons, and even give tasks like a squad from ArmA II. Or, if you're just sick enough, you can send them into the infested zones to bait everything else, or to act as your guardian angels.
If this sounds boring to you, then maybe you should stick with chancing the online mode. But if you wanted to see the world of DayZ without the hassle of pesky hackers or annoying Bandits that play for no other reason than to make your day miserable, then this mod is for you!
(This mod does not use any online capabilities, so it will not trigger or effect BattleEye [DayZ's cheat detection system] in any way!)
