"Sept. 4 - Acclaimed naturalist Steve Irwin dies after a stingray barb pierces his chest during filming of a documentary.
Australian authorities could not immediately confirm reports that an encounter with a stingray was to blame for the death of naturalist Steve Irwin whose show, The Crocodile Hunter, won international acclaim." From bbc.com
"SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, was killed by a stingray barb through the chest on Monday while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said.
"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred.
"He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury," he said.
Police and ambulance officials later confirmed Irwin had died and said his family had been advised.
Irwin, 44, was killed while filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas.
Irwin had been diving off his boat "Croc One" near Batt Reef northeast of Port Douglas. A helicopter had taken paramedics to nearby Low Isles where Irwin was taken for medical treatment but he was dead before they arrived, police said.
Irwin won a global following for his dare-devil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.
He made almost 50 of his "Crocodile Hunter" documentaries which appeared on cable TV channel Animal Planet and won a worldwide audience. The series ended after he was criticized for the incident with his young son and for disturbing whales, seals and penguins while filming in Antarctica.
Khaki-clad Irwin became famous for his seemingly death-defying methods with wild animals, including crocodiles and snakes.
He made a cameo appearance alongside Eddie Murphy in the 2001 Hollywood film Dr Dolittle 2 and appeared on U.S. television shows such as "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and on children's television alongside The Wiggles.
Irwin was married with two children, Bindi Sue and Bob Clarence. His American-born wife Terri was his business partner and frequent on-screen collaborator." From reuters.com

They said that for a ray to actually kill someone is extremely rare, so im not sure what he would have happened to get that kind of reaction from it, it is however a wild animal and may just have been having a bad day.
His shows were entertaining and made the next generation interested in animals, my thoughts go out to his young kids and wife, rest in peace.
according what posted on yahoo, the barb went though his heart, for us guys that are 43 soon to be 44, Irwin was 44,, that's not 50 yet. I enjoyed watching this guy, his knowledge was impressive !

Yes it was some starteling news. Stingrays are peacfule sea creatures for normal. Steve musta got pretty close to get hit.
He was a great animalprotector.. YES.. He was teacher and a guidance for people to show them how to handle situations. In some part of world where they have animals that are close to extinsion he worked a lot with his documentarys to show how the animals / mamals behave in a different situations to all people.
Thats why he sometimes was outofline.. Regular nature explorers never would do the things he did.
My prayers go to his family, and god bless all who continue the wildlife protection.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

I have swam with the stingrays near the Cayman Islands twice, including with my teenage daughters the second time. we fed them and petted them and had them knock us dowm. They were generally gentle, peaceful animals (though if you rubbed your hands with the bait smell on your leg, they would give you a hicky.) some of you may be getting wierd ideas, but I don't recommend you try it. The swimming experience was pretty neat however.
Very , very sad news indeed my kids loveed his shows , my oldest has a great interest through watching this guy.. he has snake`s,tarantula`s and a geko . He shall be missed for sure .

Well, he probably knew that he was going to die because of his job somday. Whats really sad is that the week before his unsightly death, he did a documentary on deadly sea animals. But the saddest part is that when he died, he was trying to help his daughter out on a new animal show she was ging to do
