Such is the harsh world of DayZ, a zombie mod for Bohemia Interactive's three-year old military simulator, ARMA II, and its 2010 expansion, ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead. Solely developed by Dean Hall (who now works for Bohemia), this multiplayer-only, open-world zombie mod is nothing like you've played before, placing emphasis on realistic survival mechanisms rather than just being a mere shooting gallery. The mod's player base has grown exponentially in the last couple of weeks due to positive word of mouth from both fans and mainstream sites alike. Because of this recent popularity, ARMA II: Combined Operations now sits comfortably near the top of the selling charts on Steam.
So what makes this mod so special? Well for one thing, the shambling corpses aren't the only threat you'll encounter. You'll have to contend with other survivors who MIGHT or MIGHT NOT help you out in your quest to stay alive.
When you first spawn into the fictional post-Soviet state of Chernarus, you're given a modest amount of ammo, food, and medicine to start you off, but beware, these things alone are enough to make you a walking target to anyone who might cross your path.
Generally, these players would be identified as “bandits” with their own custom skin to label them as such, but this is not always the case. Even if you call yourself out as being “friendly” in the public chat, other survivors will not hesitate to murder you. In one particularly painful sequence, I had been silently foraging a town for loot for more than two hours when two survivors got the drop on me and placed a well-aimed bullet into my skull.
So, just like the real world, DayZ can be heartless. Once you die, everything in your inventory is lost, and you'll have to start all over again.
It's this constant risk and reward gameplay that keeps players coming back.

Well i´ve been playing the game since the first arma2 game came out. In my opinion it´s far better than JO even if very buggy/laggy. The editor seems much easier to use (i´m a noob) so it´s even good fun playing solo. And now this Dayz...... good news seems to be that if they make it a part of arma3 it will have more building to enter and probably a new map as well. On the downside all bohemia products are unfinished and has humongous bugs and crashes. I´m also testing Iron Front Liberation 1944 and the story continues with more of the same.

I would sleep for a week if i played this.
It's not the zombies that gets your heart going in this mod, it's coming across another player and not knowing whether he is going to shoot you for your beans or not...
I think it is a good mod when you find a server with people that play it seriously. Here you can build bases (actually move stuff) and there is a food/drink system which reminds a little of dayz. You start out with a pistol but there is alot of guns stacked in almost any vehicle. Communications through side/global/vehicle/direct com channels. You can play as Bluefor, Opfor or Independent.
Blue/Opfor has missions displayed on the map, they can consist of attacking an outpost or retrive ammo crates from a plane wreck. You can even salvage choppers and refuel and repair them pretty easy.
As independent you don´t really have any missions and can kill anything you want or team up with others and set up ambushes all over the map (guns shops are good).
There is AI soldiers (priests?) on the map so beware if you are driving a armored car, their rpg´s will kill you :)
Try it and let me know what you think, maybe i seee you in game.
