That's interesting .. I just ran another trace and I'm dropped again before reaching the destination IP.

Maybe Quick got tired of me and booted me from playing on the NA TR Server .. =O

Yes Juanzynhu, the T & R circles are indicators for Transmit and Recieve.

Any time the T or/and R flash red means those packets aren't being sent or/and received. Packets usually travel (on a TCP/IP layer) with less than 1KB of data for IPv4, and I'm guessing that's the version ran for the NILE files. So, I need to look in to why I'm loosing packets with the HmS NA TR server. Simple.

How are You connected to the internet, Poncho88?

I suspect it is either the way You set up the internet connection at home or the line of Your internet service provider (ISP).

I'm behind a router.

My ISP is in the same zip code as me so there shouldn't be that much latency. Looking at my tracert, my hop time out of Texas is less than 50.0ms. My ethernet card is a 10/100/1000 (gaming version).

I'm pretty sure my end is ok, but not ruling out completely (still chasing down why I'm dropping packets on your server). When I play BF2 I have zero connection issues.

Poncho88 - I was not intending to imply anything about your knowledge, or lack of knowledge, of internet and connection issues. Please understand that we get many, MANY complaints from people about connection issues when reality is that there is simply something on their end causing the problems. In fact, the servers here have been up and running consistently for years without major problems. So, if I am suspicious of connection complaints, it just comes with the territory of hosting these many years.

Now, on to the connection problem, I appreciate your screen shots, and can see the issue. I have tried the same trace from my work to the servers and am getting the same result as you. I called Comcast and during the call I learned that, for some unknown reason, the ip address that both you and I show in the trace, and that I show when using whatismyip.com from the server machine, is different from what comcast has assigned to my modem. I'm not sure the effect of this, but it does not sound healthy and is likely the problem. So, long story short (too late), I now have a wonderful service call scheduled for this Saturday where hopefully they can figure out the what problem is with the ips and what is causing the drop.

I apologize for the problem, and appreciate the help in narrowing it down. Have patience, and hopefully it will be sorted soon.

All these wonderful things You need to do to keep the use of public ip adressess to a minimum (There's more computers, than ip adressess, the last available ones are probably used up this year) make for complicated network routing environments at the ISPs. It is easy to throw the whole delicated balance over with just one changed setting.

Experienced it once that a router that was managing one side of a backone took down the whole net, just because somebody took out one network cable and reinserted it into another slot. It caused the switch to reconfigure and to update its routing table, asking every other router to do the same on the net, so slowly but inadvertable it took down the whole net, because every switch and router was screaming down the line for information that the other devices wanted as well. It took the whole morning to reboot every single device by hand. Best guess for the reason was a simple config entry in one of the other routers on the net, but we never figured really out what actually happened. We even build a test environment to recreate it, no luck.

So hit the floor and say thank you for every day the internet works, it is actually so complex it should have keeled over long ago because complex things tend to fail.

@HmS Quick

I feel your pain.

If I had a server up and running as long as you've had one running I'd either be in jail or in serious need of "sensitivy training" by now. I'm in no hurry for anything to get fixed here so no worries .. if there's anything you need from me on my end just holler.

See you in game.

POST SCRIPT

HmS Quick, Nova did move the servers (back in DEC 10') from their original location in LA to:

23805 Stuart Ranch Road Suite #100
Malibu, CA 90285
Tel: (818) 880-1997
Fax: (818) 880-1998

So, when Nova fired the servers back up, they might be using an old static IP of yours. Did you create another account with your ISP since the Nova move?

If not then don't worry about it. Hopefully Comcast can explain why they're juggling two IPs with your name on both of them.

Yeah true. When the internet was built in the first place nobody ever thought, that it would get this big. Today You need to make it complicated to give everyone its connection into the net.
I guess IPv6 will be a good cure for that. But I fear old games cannot cope with IPv6 and thus the newly found simplicty will take away some fun.

IPv4 = 32' bit addressing scheme
IPv6 = 128' bit addressing scheme

Our Sun, along with our planet, will be dead, dead, deadski long before addresses run out under a 128' bit addressing scheme.

2^32 ~ 4.29 billion addresses
2^128 ~ 3.48 trillion trillion trillion hundred addresses .. whew

I have a dynamic ip assigned by Comcast.

I am certainly no internet guru, so I will post my understanding of whatever the technician finds. Needless to say, the servers will be down some this weekend for this work. I will also take advantage of the down time to run updates and do other regular maintenance on them.

Poncho, I do appreciate the information and screen shots. It is hard for me to know about problems like this, as I'm not playing online near as much now as I used to. So, thanks again for the information. Hopefully, this will be sorted out this weekend.

Well it certainly looks like we have a cause to develop a class action suit against Al Gore for doing such a crappy job of inventing the internet. (LOL... Yea, I know he really did not invent it (nor did any one person, group, or country))
