DFLW MED - In your Land Warrior Folder

Looks tricky, impossible to figure out on your own (nearly), a daunting task, makes you hate the MED, but can add so much to a map. It’s one of those professional add-ons to your missions – and guess what? It’s easy (yes). I can guarantee that you will have a vehicle moving round your maps in 10 minutes! The first time you try this is the trickiest, after you succeed you will wonder why you ever thought it was hard. Enough talk, get your MED open and let’s begin…

Choose your terrain in General Information. Then Right click and select Insert Mode and select Pickup under Vehicles. Come off Insert Mode.

Next click on Edit and then groups. Click on a number for example ‘3’ and then enter a description. Something like ‘Pickup 1’ would be a good choice. Click OK.

Select the truck by clicking on it. Then Right Click and choose Item Attributes. Click on the little black arrow next to ‘Groups’ and choose ‘Pickup 1’. Now the Truck is in the ‘Pickup 1’ group. Click ok and unselect the truck.

Next click on Edit and then choose Waypoints. Pick a number for example ‘1’ and enter a description. Something like ‘Pickup 1 waypoint’ is good cause it is simple and it’s easy to identify what the waypoint belongs to. If you want the Truck to make a one-way journey, select ‘Waypoint does NOT loop’. If you want it riding round forever then leave it unselected. Then click OK.

The next step is to plot / set the way you want the truck to travel. For this you are going to have to use waypoints! These are easy to use to so don’t worry. Enter insert mode and select ‘waypoint’ under ‘markers’. Then put as many waypoints down as you think necessary. Try to avoid unnecessary ones like more than 2 in a straight line. These can be easily moved so don’t worry too much about placement at the moment. Also more can be added or some taken away later on.

Next make sure nothing is selected by clicking on ‘unselect all’ at the top of the page. Then click on each of the waypoints until all are selected. Then right click and select item attributes. The screen that comes up has a section called waypoints at the top right. Where it says ‘list’ select the name of the waypoint you typed in before e.g. ‘pickup waypoint 1’. So now the computer knows that all the selected waypoints make up Pickup 1’s route.

Now unselect everything again. The waypoints need to be put in order so the computer knows where to sent d the truck. So select the first waypoint and go to ‘item attributes’. If you go to the ‘waypoint’ section again you will see that it in list ‘Pickup 1 waypoint’ and ‘number 0’. That is fine, so click on ok. Repeat for the second waypoint but this must be list ‘Pickup 1 waypoint’ and ‘number 1’. The third waypoint will be ‘number 2’ etc etc. A little confusing at first but always remember that the first waypoint is ‘0’, the second is ‘1’ …

Hopefully now there will be a line connecting all the points? If not, you may have got mixed up somewhere so you will need to start over. No worries, it’s tricky at first.

Unselect all, and select only the truck. Bring up item attributes and go select ‘Pickup 1 waypoint’. So now we have a truck which is in a group and it knows which waypoints to follow, and we have got a set of waypoints that belong to the truck and are numbered correctly so the truck knows where to go next.

Next we need to create an ‘Event’ so that the computer knows when to move the truck. I will cover events in detail in another tutorial, but to make the truck move at the moment we are going to use a simple method called an ‘area trigger’.

Go on insert mode, and select start player from markers and place it anywhere you want but preferably near to the truck just in this example. Next select Area trigger from Markers – it should be at the top. And place it near to the player start points. Then get another area trigger and place it on the other side of the start player. See picture below to get what I mean, it’s hard to describe but we want a box around the start player.

Click on edit and select Area Triggers. Pick a number – 1 is good. Then name it something, - ‘make pickup 1 move’ would be a good choice. Click ok, go to select mode and select both Area triggers. Go to Item Attributes and at the top right where it says ‘number’, change it from 0 to 1. So now both Area Triggers will be number 1.
What we just did was to make Area Trigger 1. Different area triggers should be different numbers, and both points that make up a trigger must be the same number. Confused? It will make sense don’t worry.

Select the start player, go to Item Attributes, and in the Group box select Blue Players. So the Player is now a Blue Player. You could put it in any group you wanted but it’s just for this tutorial.

Now to get it moving. We have all the ingredients but we need to mix them together to get the finished product which will be a moving truck.

Click on ‘Edit’ and select ‘Events’. Give it a name e.g. ‘Make Pickup 1 move’.

In the ‘If’ section click on <>select ‘trigger type - Group’

‘trigger condition – Area Trigger’.

‘group – Blue Players’

‘area – make pickup 1 move’

click OK

In the ‘Then’ section select <>Action type = redirect group to

Group = Pickup 1

Waypoint List = Pickup 1 waypoint

Click OK

Then select <> (in the ‘Then’ section) again

Action Type - Change group velocity

Group - Pickup 1

Group Velocity - what ever u want. (about 15 is the running speed of a soldier so u may want it faster – experiment)

Click OK

Now save and export your map and see it in action.
