Although Mars reaches perihelic opposition {close approach} every 26 months with the earth, it will not appear as large or nearly as bright as the Moon. Mars is now visible low in the east at 12:00 AM EDT.
Through my 254mm Newtonian reflector it is rather bright and shows some surface detail at a magnification of 300X.
Actually Mars will not be at its closest point to us until October of this year.
In August 2003 the Earth and Mars were closest to each other since nearly 60,000 years ago. We will not be as close this year.
