Thanks for the offer Plazma, but it is already sorted.
The router is pretty good, it is a DrayTeK Vigor, it comes around 270$-280$ and can push 200 Mbit/s through the firewall and 50 Mbit/s through the VPN-tunnel. Plenty enough for my 12Mbit/s ADSL line. It was just new to me and I had to work my way into it. Since, at the moment, I only have about 30 minutes each evening, to do such stuff, it just took longer to get it sorted.
Although if you haven't yet, I would suggest having a play with pf sense on some old hardware or a vm.
If you spending that amount of cash again you could easily make a low power pf sense box with a dual core x64 capable cpu and 2gb of ram with 1000Mbit lan and a cpu that can handle the speed, for the same money or less.
Ive deployed a few for people and wouldn't use anything else, the only thing i use mips based devices for are wireless access points now, even then they get a dd-wrt or openwrt dusting.
One of the other great features of pf sense is the QOS rules (its a proper traffic shaper) are not just QOS based on priority your also able to set a minimum guaranteed speed for x service, which is great for VOIP and for game servers.
Regarding VPN I run openvpn these days, stick it on port 443 and set it for tcp instead of udp and even the most anal of firewalls lets it past as it thinks it normal https traffic ;)
Have you setup QOS on the new router? It might be worth do so if your on 12mb (if you havent already) so the jo server(s) dont eat to much of your bandwidth and things like non real time traffic dont eat bandwidth over the other things (eg ssh/pop3/smtp/etc)
