Hi I have a question about the Ventrilo program, in comparison with Teamspeak can you see the name (nick) of the peson who´s talking in game? There is a small prg available for TS called TSO (teamspeak overlay) downloadable for free, which enables you to modify a type of ingame hud that shows FPS, TS channel, your nick etc. You can choose different parameters like fontsize and if you want the info shown to be centered right or left on your screen. I find this very good when playing because it lets you to know who´s joining your channel and who´s talking without minimizing your game. This is very useful when you talk to people for the first couple of times and don´t recognize their voice. For those of you that uses TS and haven´t tried it out plz do I recommend it strongly. Here is where you get it http://www.teamspeakoverlay.com/

Yup its very good, i have seen it working, makes life much easier.

But us stubburn guys will stick to Ventrilo LOL, you hear the actual players name when they join the server and also when they join the channel, so if your in the game you know who you have in your channel, but with Team Speak it just says player joined, player left.

Team Speak is geared up for gamers more than Ventrilo, you have more options with it and most squads use it rather than Ventrilo. We started off hosting Ventrilo ourselves on an older version with a lower codec, we tried Team speak with the same codec at the same time and still we thought Ventrilo's quality was better and now we have a dedicated hosting company running our servers with a much higher codec Ventrilo is as clear as a phone call.

Hey Wedge, I've never heard the announcements you refer to - do I need to alter a setting, or is this a text-to-voice thing?? Running W2K on a slowbie machine but decent soundcard. (54)

No its all done for you when you join the VT server, you get the higher codec from the server end not from your end so your already getting the better quality ;)

With reguards to the "hud" thats only for Team Speak, Ventrilo doesnt have that option, and i doubt it ever will have, its a tie up between whats better, a few more add ons you get with Team Speak like the hud, or Ventrilo with its quality.

There is a huge debate all around the gaming community about which ones better, some say they get lag with VT while playing and not TS, while others like TS for the extra things like the hud, with VT you get to hear the players names as they join the server and is fairly easy to set up and much better voice quality, i guess at the end of the day its personal preference, thats why we have a Team Speak server along with the main Ventrilo server, so people can choose to use either VT or TS, nice to have the option.

Other ones like Roger Wilco i think most agree are not worth the effort of installing, thats why you never see them on offer from hosting companys or Squad servers, Team Speak is the prefered VON for most gamers, and a huge proportion of squads use it rather than VT, but hey we like to be different LOL, and we like what Ventrilo gives us in Quality and ease of use, like i say, we had a look at them both at the start and it was clear to us what was the better one to go for, if you get a chance try them both out it would be interesting to see what you think, id put money on you prefering VT (3) , we hhmm well maybe not money im scottish after all (23)

Ranger Six knows what it is D-Day. Maybe he'll post here.

There is something in Windows that is probably not installed that allows you to hear the phonetic announcements, like "D-Day has joined the channel."

Q: I'm using Windows 9x/2000/XP and I don't hear Text-to-speech (TTS) messages.

Microsoft XP comes with the TTS libraries built in but some people have experienced problems making it work for one reason or another. Thus, the following instructions might help them as well.

On Windows 9x and 2000 platforms you need to download and install the libraries manually. Click here http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51/ and download the "Speech SDK 5.1" file, all 68Meg of it, then install the file using the default installation information. The next time you start Ventrilo it will automatically detect the presence of the TTS library and use it.

Once the library is installed you can tell Ventrilo to generate TTS message when certain events occur, and whether or not it should process incoming TTS messages from other users. Click on the Setup button and then click on the Speech and Event tabs to control TTS processing.

you actually dont need (15) (and should not get) the whole sdk (software development) pack 68mb to install the tts library, its for developers and come with a bunch of junk you dont need (19) .
get microsoft reader 3.58mb, activate it (follow the steps) ,then get the tts add-on 5.8mb for it..both are free from microsoft.com...this way you dont have to get a bunch of stuff you dont need and you get a program you can use later (ms reader) (58)

if you want more voice choices then you can just google for tts voices to change the default voices like these
its a direct link to the download, then install it.. now go to your control panel and click the speech icon it will list the voices available, choose one to be the default. (41)

i downloaded and installed these items in the order i posted them, ran them and ended up with five voices..LH michael,LH michelle, microsoft "mike, mary, and sam". ventrillo will auto find them the next time you start up vt..all you do is choose which voice you like best or go with the default.
wow my pc now talks..so will yours (30)
