Wolfenstein 3D is generally credited as being responsible for the first-person shooter craze that continues to this day. Released at the height of the 'Interactive CD-ROM' era, there were surprisingly few clones until Doom's release in 1993, the most notable being Rise of the Triad in 1994 and Duke Nukem 3D in 1996. Most of these games were distributed via the same shareware strategy as the original.

so i guess thats the first fps game then?

My top favourites (in no particular order);
Goldeneye on N64
FF VII (genre making and great music)
GTA vice city (music from my era)
JO (obvious but my first soiree into online gaming)
but the games that got me into gaming were Sonic and desert strike on the megadrive (genesis to you US citizens)

It has to be DOOM the as best game so far it was the first game you could use a CHAINSAW!!!! Smart ppl could make new maps and if you had a network you could kill your friends in the next room. I know we all play games with much better graphix now online but what was the first FPS you played. I know Wolfenstine was out before DOOM but that only had limited playability. The real quantum leap to proper FPS games was the original DOOM. Where else can you find a BFG, if you were playing DOOM you needed to know how to fire one.
