I downloaded this Joint Operations mod a few days ago. It's still beta, but it's looking good already. It has all the objects and terrains from JO:TR, JO:ESC and DFX, and maps from these 3 games work in this mod. It also has a bunch of new terrains and objects available, and what I saw from it looked very nice.
The mod is stand-alone, it isn't installed as an expansion in your JO:TR folder but in a seperated folder. It comes with the DFX editor included complete with all files needed to start making maps. I have the mod installed for 4 days now, and already finished 1 map, so it isn't hard to get used to this mod.
From what I saw the mod also has some airplanes included, but I haven't tested how they work yet as they didn't fit in the first map idea I had for this mod. The machine gun baddies that are forced into prone position did fit nicely, and those can be very nasty when hidden under a tree. I'm still rather new to this mod, but I like it already.
Here are some screenshots of the map I made in this mod, to give an idea how much not like JO it looks. I haven't played DFX myself (except the demo), but I think it might look more like DFX then JO, based on what I saw from DFX.
Didn't see that thread, it must be about the first version of this mod. This mod (AW2) came out just a few weeks ago, so I didn't browse back in the forum to last year to see a topic about an old version of the mod. I didn't had the first AW mod myself, so I don't know how much AW2 changed compared to the first version.

Well as you can see from the other thread not many people thought much of it, Novalogic did not approve it because many of the objects are alledgely taken from other games, the download is so big because it is stand alone, when you install your own copy of Joint Operations you put your cd key in, i dont know how they do it as a stand alone without having any form of cd key. We have also had people uninstalling AW and it removing not only the AW mod but their main JO folder.
Yes it has some good things but it will need to have improved a great deal from the first version.
