I listen to BBC R4 while testin out the electrics in chilly caravans at present, and heard a recording of Dave Allen, (you lot over the water try gooooogle) anyhow, he was always on stage with a fag in one hand (thats a cigarette in yankee) and a Scotch in the other, (No, not his hand up a kilt, goodness you are a bad lot!!)and told jokes about the Pope, sex, booze in a laid back way..
Intro over:

A fellah was arriving at a new town in Ireland, bin walking for days.
There was something odd about the place, as he got nearer he realised there was nothing going on, no sign of people, just the odd curtain twitching as he passed, no one on the streets.

He went a way down the road, and round the corner came a huge procession of people dressed in black, following a horse-drawn hearse in silence.

At the head of the procession was an immense man, face like it was carved from granite, towering above everybody, and on the end of a thick chain was his dog, an Irish wolfhound, but like the man, twice as big as normal.
Following on behind the man was a line of fellahs, heads bowed, that reached back as far as the eye could see.

The newcomer couldn't hold back his curiousity, and he walked by the big man, and asked him politely who the deceased dignitary had been, obviously someone who was greatly loved.

The big man scowled and said "That's my wife in the hearse, and she was the most hated, despised, unpopular person in the town"

"And I suppose that was her dog?" asked the newcomer
"No, that's my dog," replied the big man, " and he hated her more than anyone, it was him tdat killed her, chewed her throat out he did"
"Well now dere's a thing, would you consider lending me the hound fer a day or two??"
"You're more than welcome," said the big man "but you'll have to get to the back of the queue!" pointing at the mourners.....
