BRINK - first impressions review
First impressions are: FAST. Its a pretty fast and intense game depending on what mode you are playing. So far I've tried the coop play and the challenges. Haven't dived into the online game play yet.
For those that haven't kept up. BRINK is set on an "ARK" in the future after the great flood. The ark is a floating city that has over time broken into 2 factions: Security and Rebels. The Rebels want to get off the ark to find any other survivors and the see if there is anything better - they disrupt the systems in order to do this. The Security is obviously the opposite side - trying to maitain the fragile order. You get to play either side.
Coop - YES, there IS coop (sorta). The coop mode uses up to 16 players - 8 on a side. There are about 10 missions, which you can play through as either the Rebels, or the Security (essentially the same missions-just different point of view). Each mission has objectives that you need to do. You may have to attack an area to obtain information or codes to move on, which lets you get to the next objective within the mission. Or you may have to defend that info - if you loose it you get pushed back to the next objective. Each mission/objective is time based - anywhere from 5-15 minutes per objective. And that time goes fast. remember Battelfield Desert Combat mod? Its like that - but a LOT faster and more confined with time constraints.
The server can fill out the number of players with AI bots. ALL human players in coop go to the same side - not sure if thats a server setting or not. This also happens if you play the campaigns/challenges yourself. Very handy as some of the AI are VERY good shots. Expect to die OFTEN. When you get shot if there is a med nearby they can revive you very easily - or you can opt to respawn at your base. Good thing here is the base is usually quite close so you don't spend the next 5 minutes running back - usually 5-20 seconds and your back in the action.
The playing fields are all set in small areas with lots of corridors, rooms, containers, etc. Forget about sitting in one spot and sniping - if you don't move around you die. You can hold back and support a little, but since there are so many paths to every objective you'll get it in the back very soon. However, the enemy team CANNOT spawn rape your homebase - the developers put some very badass guns covering that area so if you try you can ripped to shreds in seconds (someone had brains finally). The developers created what they call "SMART" moving where you look at a spot run and press the shift key (default) and the character moves/slides/jumps/climbs to that spot. It usually works, but you have to be careful or you'll overshoot your target.
There are 4 classes of character: med, soldier, engineer, and operative. Look at the vids posted above to see what the classes are all about. As you play you get XP or experience points. You use these to level up your character to get new outfits or look for you character and unlock new guns/abilities. For the most part even newbies can play with someone at higher levels without a problem since most guns are unlocked from the begining. And each side (Rebel/Security) have the SAME guns so you don't have to set each one up. The oufits/look of your character is irrelevant in the game - makes no difference to your gameplay. The type of body you select does though (body type unlock as you level up) - like a heavy body will let you carry different weapons (like a minigun) versus lighter weapons for the slim build. Sorry ladies - the developers all made the characters male.
The look of the game is great, its not super realistic/grungy like Crysis, or cartoony like Borderlands, but works perfect for this game. I never had any lag with my system (quad core, W7, ATI-5770), and lesser computers should be able to play it still with lower settings. Steam has already released the dedi-server files, which is a good thing since we found that host/play doesn't really work that well (yet). You can run a dedi and play on it with no problems - although getting the settings right are a little tricky. Brink is still sending out patches so it will get better.
The way the developers take cheap shots at console player, you get the idea that it was created for PC gamers in mind, and tacked on the console. You can't play against consolers - which is too bad cuz PC's would rip them to shreds.
Overall I'd give the game about 8/10 for now. The graphics/audio are great, the gameplay is high with a high replayable factor in there, but if you get frustrated easily and don't like dying in games - forget it. Its a fast passed game where you HAVE to constantly move forward or loose.

Played this game a bit on-line. Its ok but pick servers carefully as it can lag really badly. Also seems to be a memory leak in the coding as after 60mins or so it feels like running in treacle. I quit the game, restart and its ok again.
