I realize that my post could have been misconstrued as a shot accross the bow at members of your group. i hope you realize my frustration in trying to find any tidbits on hosting tools. i also understand there has been others that have burned members in the past concerning this issue. But, not all of us are like them. I appreciate the work involved in coordinating and running thes site and servers. I enjoy playing in them and talking to members on VT for over 2 years. But, i hope you realize that for some its time to "leave the nest" so to say. I look foward to running my own games even if its once and a while on the weekends. You definitely have to know the ins and outs of your equipement. See you on the battle field.

Its quite simple Skullsplitter, we have been hosting for over 5 years, during that time we have help, mostly via VT lots of ppl to set up servers, next thing we see a drop off in ppl in vt and a new squad is formed from these ppl, whilst we dont mind other squads being around and ppl forming squads you can see that we have a lot of resources running for ppl to play and have fun with, it costs us money(which we dont mind) but we do like to see our resources used. Many of these "splinter" squads only last a short time, they soon realise what hard work and dedication it takes to keep a server running 24/7 and all the squad members happy, thats why we only take few members a year, ppl we already know well, and ppl we know will not rock the boat.

Yes, Skull, I saw your post and I guess I "misconstrued" your comments as a shot across the bow at people here. I don't think I'm misconstruing anything you've said. I think you aren't happy that people here that know how to host and run the servers and services that we provide to our Hardmaps.com community, and we haven't helped you to figure out how to startup your own server. Well, you've been on our VT, in our games, and on our website for a long while now, enjoying all the services that we offer, meeting people and making friends. As Trev said, in the past, we've helped others to start their own servers, and have been kindly thanked by these same people starting their own servers and taking people that we work to get to join us in VT or in games away to the other servers.

Now, whether you know it or not, with almost every single person that comes to our games, and onto our VT, we make efforts to help the new people get connected, get their settings sorted out, helping them learn how to play the game, etc. That is us, *HmS* squad members, taking our time out of our day, and taking time out from our gaming to help people get going and get started having a good time. Since we spend a fair amount of our time, resources, money, patience, etc. helping out those people that think enough of us to come into our little world, we aren't keen to see any of these folks leaving. This is true whether these people get invited to join our squad, or not. We form relationships and friendships with all the people we meet in our games and our VT.

So, bottom line is that we just aren't going to help people setup servers. It is nothing personal against you, it is our policy for all that ask us how to do it. We've lost some people that were good players and good friends from VT by having them go with others to new servers, and we don't like it, and we won't repeat it. This is the policy here, whether you like it or not.

And one final thing, posting sarcastic comments and/or criticisms of the decisions and policies that we make won't get you far.

The hosting thing,

It doesn't matter i've already figured it out. It's not rocket science.

The cost thing,

I spent about 15 min. on the internet and found countless resources that do exactly what you guys offer, all free. And just as good.

The sarcasm thing,

Well, I have decided to be the better man in this issue and leave it alone.

So, do to the shear boredome of the repetitvly boring and/or stuck maps, i've decided to move on.

The only thing we have and will continue to offer is a place for people to hang out, catch up and have have a game, its the Hardmaps Community, people who like playing with others, meeting up and having a laugh.

Have fun finding other maps that work 100% of the time. Its taken us years to build our map base - and guess what - well over 50% of maps we test never make it to our servers because they don't play right. Yes maps get stuck, but thats generally due to players doing something incorrectly, not the map itself OR the server.

AS to being the better man? You took the first needless shot - we were clarifying our position.

Yup - there are many places out there where you can moan and b*tch and complain about things that you don't like - feel free to use them instead of ours - we won't mind that part.

Maybe Skullsplitter 1 should have taken the 15 minutes of time to search for info on these hosting tools he was curious about. In my own experience that is enough to get a temporary server started for a couple of games. As I myself found out, the hard part is finding good maps which are liked by everyone playing (still looking for the first one!). I am personally very happy and glad that the HmS server I came across offered everything for free to me. Now I don't have that hassle anymore, got more time to play and meet more people to play with. Instead of testing maps by myself, I try to give back a little of what I get here by participating in map tests on HmS servers and contributing to the community.
Bottom line: I had to host for me and my buddies and it was tough and I disliked it in the end, now I have a lot of fun and shouting a big THANK YOU! to the HmS Crew anytime the possibilty arises (like now).

Rock on HmS! You are doing a very good job and have every right to do it the way you think it is best. Even it if you weren't doing it as great it would still be far better than most could ever do!
